Roatan is home to about 25,000 Friendly and easy going residents, with about 2,000 expatriate americans. Cultures that influence Roatan are British Colonialists, Garifunas, Meztisos and Americans Honduras have a population of almost 6 million, the mountainous land mass stretches from the Caribbean to the Pacific. The country achieved independence from Spain in 1821. Various indigenous cultures populated pre-colonial Honduras,the most significant of which was the highly developed Mayan civilization. During the colonial era, the lack of rich soils prevented the emergence of a land-based elite. Until the 20th Century, progress largely bypassed Honduras. Spanish is the official language on the island; thats why , legal documents must be done in Spanish, the second language on Roatan is English and it´s also the most popular. Lifestyle & Activities

Documents
Citizens from the following countries require a valid passport to enter Honduras: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, El Salvador, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Iceland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Ireland, Norway, Panama, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States of America and Uruguay. Visitors of other nationalities must have a valid visa. Please contact the Honduran Consulate for more information. There is a departure tax of US $20 upon leaving Roatan.
Health
No health cards or shots are required for entry or stay in Roatan. There are several clinics and one hospital on the island, and a recompression chamber for divers. Larger medical facilities are available in San Pedro Sula (on the mainland) and La Ceiba.
